How Brooklyn Delhi turned immigrant memory into a pantry staple

When Chitra Agrawal founded Brooklyn Delhi in 2014, she wasn’t setting out to build a national food brand. She was trying to make sense of her family’s immigrant story — one jar of achaar at a time.

Agrawal, whose parents emigrated from India in 1967, grew up balancing two worlds: the American classroom and the Indian kitchen. “Food was how I connected to my roots,” she has said in earlier interviews. That connection eventually became the foundation of Brooklyn Delhi, which she co-founded with her partner, artist Ben Buchanan.
