An Indian student at Florida State University is receiving support through a GoFundMe campaign after suffering life-threatening burns in a Nov. 19 apartment fire in Tallahassee.

The fundraiser was launched for 27-year-old Preet Harsoda, who was one of eight people injured in the blaze at The Social Seminole apartment complex on Ocala Road. According to friends, Harsoda suffered burns over most of his body and remains in critical condition.

Harsoda moved to Florida recently from India to pursue his education. His friends wrote that he “came to America dreaming of the better life he could achieve” and had only just begun building his life in the United States when the fire “turned upside down” everything he planned.

The online fundraiser says Harsoda is on a ventilator and undergoing continuous dialysis after being first treated at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare and later flown to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville. The campaign states he will require multiple surgeries, including skin grafts, as well as long-term medical care.

The GoFundMe page says the funds will help cover medical and rehabilitation costs, medication, travel for his family from India and other expenses. “Your support — no matter the amount — will make a real difference by easing the financial burden on his family so they can focus on what matters most: helping Preet survive and heal,” the page states.

As of the latest update on the fundraiser, more than $24,647 has been raised toward a $100,000 goal.

A separate fundraising effort is underway to support at least 30 other Indian students who were injured or displaced in the same fire.

“Please keep Preet in your thoughts and prayers,” friends wrote. “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your kindness, generosity, and support during this incredibly difficult time.”
