Duke University will host Indian-origin economist Gita Gopinath for a pivotal discussion on the global economy as part of the David M. Rubenstein Distinguished Lecture Series on April 8.

Gopinath will be addressing critical issues such as rising tariffs, evolving trade policies, and the prevailing uncertainty in the global economic landscape, the university said.

A professor of economics at Harvard University and former First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Gopinath will appear in conversation with David Rubenstein, co-founder and co-chairman of the Carlyle Group and a Duke alumnus.

According to the Sanford School of Public Policy, which is presenting the event titled “What in the World (Economy) is Happening? Current Insights on the Global Financial Order,” the fireside chat will address “the defining topics of 2026,”  amid rapid changes in international trade policy and the uncertainty surrounding a shifting global economic order.

The program will also examine the policy choices shaping the path toward sustainable global growth and the broader challenge of steering the global economy through periods of turbulence.

Organizers said the session will draw on Gopinath’s experience at the IMF and her role in global policymaking, including managing economic crises. The discussion will also touch on her career trajectory from academia to international leadership and her views on the future of women in economics and public service.

The event description states that the conversation, guided by Rubenstein, will offer “sharp analysis” and “rare insight into what it means to lead with clarity in uncertain times.”

The lecture is part of an annual series that brings high-profile policymakers and thought leaders to Duke University. It is presented by the Sanford School of Public Policy in partnership with Duke’s Department of Economics.

The event will be held at Page Auditorium on Duke’s West Campus beginning at 8:30 a.m. The event is free and open to the public, with a limit of two tickets per attendee and general seating.
