Williamsburg-based William & Mary Law School named former New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal as the commencement speaker for its Class of 2026 ceremony.

William & Mary Law dean A. Benjamin Spencer said Grewal’s public service and legal career made him a fitting choice for the graduating class.“As a public servant, valued legal partner, and citizen lawyer, Grewal embodies the values of excellence, professionalism, and a commitment to justice we strive to instill in our students.”

Grewal, a 1999 graduate of the law school, most recently served as director of the Division of Enforcement at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission from July 2021 to October 2024. He joined Milbank LLP’s New York office in January 2025 as a partner advising clients on regulatory and complex litigation matters.

Before joining the SEC, Grewal served as New Jersey’s 61st attorney general from 2018 to 2021, becoming the first Sikh American attorney general in U.S. history. He was also the second South Asian to serve as a state attorney general in the United States, after Kamala Harris in California.

As attorney general, Grewal focused on protecting residents in court, fighting the opioid crisis, combating gun violence, and strengthening community trust. Earlier, Grewal served as Bergen County prosecutor, the chief law enforcement officer of New Jersey’s most populous county, where he was also the first Sikh American to serve as a county prosecutor in the United States.

Prior to that, he spent about a decade as a federal prosecutor in New York and New Jersey, handling cases involving economic crimes, white-collar fraud, cybercrime, narcotics, and terrorism.

At the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey, he served as chief of the Economic Crimes Unit, overseeing major white-collar and cybercrime prosecutions. His earlier federal service in the Eastern District of New York included work in the Business and Securities Fraud Unit.

Grewal is the son of Punjabi Sikh Indian immigrants and grew up in Fairfield Township, New Jersey. He earned his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service before receiving his Juris Doctor from William & Mary Law School in 1999.

The ceremony will be held on May 16 at Kaplan Arena, where approximately 180 students are expected to receive degrees across the J.D., LL.M., and M.L.S. programs.
