Penn State awards Gopi Yalavarthi fellowship for gut microbiome research
The fellowship will support Yalavarthi's research on using dietary fiber to reshape the gut microbiome and promote healing in inflammatory bowel disease.

The One Health Microbiome Center (OHMC) at Penn State has awarded Indian-origin doctoral candidate Gopi Yalavarthi with the 2026 Interdisciplinary Innovation Fellowship.
The fellowship is designed to help researchers expand their expertise beyond their primary field while fostering collaborations across traditionally separate academic disciplines.
Yalavarthi has been named one of three recipients of the Fellowship earning support to advance research exploring how dietary fiber can improve gut health in people with inflammatory bowel disease.

Yalavarthi, a doctoral candidate in nutritional sciences advised by Vishal Singh, will use the fellowship to pursue the project, "Harnessing dietary fiber to reshape the gut microbiome and promote mucosal repair in inflammatory bowel disease."
As part of the program, Yalavarthi will train with Darrell Cockburn, associate professor of food science, to develop new interdisciplinary skills and research approaches.
“I am honored to receive the IIF and excited to advance our research on how dietary fibers can reshape the gut microbiome and promote intestinal healing in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). I look forward to developing findings that may support safe, diet-based strategies to complement existing treatments for individuals living with IBD,” Yalavarthi said.
Seth Bordenstein, director of the One Health Microbiome Center, said the fellowship reflects the center's mission of enabling researchers to broaden their training through laboratory experiences with other faculty members or external collaborators.
The 2026 awards also went to Zachary Budimir and Sijia Yang for interdisciplinary research projects spanning microbiome science and human health.
Yalavarthi earned a Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry from Nanaji Deshmukh Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry University, India and a Master of Science in Animal Sciences at the University of Connecticut.
Established in 2022, the fellowship supports trainee-led projects that encourage collaboration across disciplines through short-term research experiences at Penn State or partner institutions. Fellows return to their home laboratories to apply and share newly acquired expertise with the broader OHMC community.
