India’s 77th Independence Day was celebrated across the US by Indian American Community. The US leadership extended their wishes to the Indian diaspora. On the occasion, the Council of Heritage and Arts of India, Inc. also known as CHAI and the India Association of Buffalo (IAB) organized an India Day Parade in Williamsville, Buffalo and the Festival of India at Buffalo Waterfront at Canalside, Buffalo respectively.
The parade celebrated India’s freedom, democracy and heritage. It was attended by the Consul General of India in New York Randhir Jaiswal, New York Assembly members Karen McMahon and Monica Wallace, Deputy Director of Asian American Affairs for New York State and CHAI’s executive director Sibu Nair, and other prominent Indian Americans in the region.
Assemblywoman McMahon presented an Assembly Proclamation to Nair for his invaluable service connecting and representing Asian American communities throughout New York State. She said, “I had a great time marching in the second annual India Day Parade sponsored by CHAI.” McMahon and Wallace also presented CHAI with $25,000 in funding that they secured to support the cultural event, according to a release.
Meanwhile, the Festival of India showcased an amalgamation of Indo-Western cultural performances, including Bollywood mashups, according to a release. There were also diverse cultures, vendors, and food stalls.
Indian American Pennsylvania State Representative Arvind Venkat attended the Festival of India. He wrote on X, “I attended the India Association of Buffalo’s Festival of India to celebrate with the vibrant Western NY South Asian community. Thank you for the kind invitation to bring the greetings & salutations from the Western PA South Asian community to your festivities.”
In honour of India Day, Pennsylvania Commonwealth Governor Joshua David Shapiro released a communiqué, stating, “The Indian community should feel a great deal of pride and accomplishment in reflection of all that has been achieved in the last seventy- seven years. I am certain that they will continue to be instrumental in the success and welfare of our Commonwealth for many generations to come.”
