NYU Tandon honors Rakesh Behera with dean’s award

He was honored for innovative online teaching, and commitment to student success in digital classrooms.

New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering has recognized Indian-American academician Rakesh Behera with the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Online Education, honoring his contributions to digital teaching.  

The honor is, “given to instructors who have demonstrated excellence through personal commitment to students and the development and delivery of innovative online education material,” the university said in a statement.

Behera, currently an associate professor in the department of mechanical and aerospace engineering, joined NYU Tandon in 2016 as an industry assistant professor after a distinguished career in research and teaching across several institutions. 

Before coming to NYU, he served as a research assistant at Louisiana State University and the University of Florida, later becoming a postdoctoral fellow and research scientist at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His research spans materials for energy applications, computational materials science, ferroelectrics, nuclear materials, and organic co-crystals.

His academic journey includes degrees from the National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, India, Louisiana State University and the University of Florida.
