Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer appointed Mandeep Singh to the Michigan Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission (MAPAAC) on Feb. 11.

Troy resident Singh fills a vacancy created by the resignation of Anterjot Singh Bains from the commission that advances the interests of Michigan's over 300,000 AAPI residents.

Singh holds a Bachelor of Arts in management information systems from the University of Missouri-Saint Louis. He is the founder of Aasraa, an organization focused on improving food security in southeast Michigan, which provides about 700 hot meals each month to individuals in need.

In addition, Singh serves as director of events and volunteer coordinator at the Sikh Youth Alliance of North America. He is also a selection committee member at the Sikh Gurdwara in Rochester Hills.

The MAPAAC works to engage Asian Pacific Americans across the state and promote their participation in state affairs. The commission’s vision is to function as a model body advancing these goals.

The governor’s appointment is for a partial term effective immediately and expiring Nov. 30. It requires the advice and consent of the Senate.
