Senior Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said he “left the Capitol Hill very pleased” after leading an All-Party Delegation that held a series of meetings with U.S. lawmakers in Washington DC on June 4. The delegation later addressed members of the Indian and American press at the Indian Embassy, where Tharoor shared details of the group’s meetings with Congressional leaders.

The discussions, which took place on June 4 focused on terrorism and broader India-U.S. relations.

The all-party delegation, which includes MPs from multiple Indian political parties and India’s former Ambassador to the U.S. Taranjit Sandhu, is currently on a diplomatic visit to the United States. “We didn’t request a formal Senate resolution,” Tharoor said when asked if the meetings could lead to an official statement from the Senate or the House. “Our interest was more in talking to those who were willing to talk to us and giving our point of view.”

The delegation met with members of the India Caucus, the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“All three sets of conversations, we got very positive feedback from all the attendees,” Tharoor said.

He detailed the structure of the meetings: “We first met with the India caucus representatives. Both the co-chairs came, a couple of others came. Then we had a meeting with the House Foreign Affairs Committee representatives... and then we had a very good session with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, with half a dozen senators — five of whom are on the Foreign Affairs Committee and one from the Intelligence Committee.”

Tharoor highlighted the bipartisan support expressed during the meetings.

“We didn’t have a single skeptical or negative voice,” he said. “On the contrary, what we got was very, very positive responses.”

He spoke about the sentiment conveyed by U.S. lawmakers: “The two key lines I would use are — number one, total support and solidarity for India in its fight against terrorism; and second, complete understanding of India’s right to defend itself against terrorism.”

Tharoor also said that the support extended beyond India’s security concerns.

“It’s not just a question of standing with us against terror,” he continued. “They also are thinking positively about economic development, cooperation, trade, investment.”

Other members of the delegation include Sarfaraz Ahmad (JMM), Ganti Harish Madhur Balayogi (TDP), Shashank Mani Tripathi (BJP), Bhubaneswar Kalita (BJP), Milind Deora (Shiv Sena), Tejasvi Surya (BJP), and former Ambassador Taranjit Sandhu.
