London Business School has named Indian American professor of strategy and entrepreneurship Sendil Ethiraj as the first Dawson chair in strategy and entrepreneurship.
The position, intended to advance the school’s leadership in strategic management and entrepreneurship, is established through a £3 million (USD3.97 million) contribution from alumnus John Dawson and his wife Sam.

Announcing the appointment, dean Sergei Guriev said Ethiraj’s work had significantly shaped research in the field. "Professor Ethiraj stands out as a prominent scholar in the field of strategy and entrepreneurship, renowned for his research and thought leadership in these areas."
"We are deeply grateful to John and Sam Dawson for their extraordinary generosity and for supporting the future of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at London Business School. We are delighted to have such an outstanding inaugural holder of this prestigious professorship," he added.
Ethiraj is widely cited for research examining innovation, competitive strategy and corporate strategy, including how diversified firms manage complexity across units.
He has published in leading journals and has held senior editorial roles, serving as co-editor of Strategic Management Journal from 2015 to 2022 and as department editor at Management Science.
At London Business School, Ethiraj has held multiple leadership positions, including deputy dean (faculty) and membership on the governing body from 2022 to 2025. He also chaired the school’s Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging advisory board.
Deputy dean Gillian Ku said Ethiraj’s work continued to influence both scholarship and teaching. "Sendil’s exceptional scholarship and leadership have consistently advanced our understanding of strategic management and innovation."
"His commitment to rigorous research and impactful teaching embodies the values of our institution, and we are confident that his contributions in the role of Dawson Chair in Strategy and Entrepreneurship will further strengthen our academic community and reputation," she added.
Ethiraj, originally from India, completed a PhD in management at The Wharton School and previously taught at the Ross School of Business for more than a decade. Since joining London Business School in 2013, he has served as adviser to MBA and EMBA programmes, area chair for strategy and entrepreneurship and PhD coordinator.
His teaching and research cover innovation, competitive strategy, organisational structure and human capital, with current projects examining the intersection of strategy and public policy through a combination of fieldwork and archival data.
He has held editorial board roles across major journals in the field, including his tenure as department editor of Management Science and co-editor of Strategic Management Journal.
