U.S. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi has built a commanding lead in the Democratic primary for Illinois’ open U.S. Senate seat, according to a new poll.
The Change Research survey, conducted Dec. 4–8 among likely Democratic primary voters and released internally by the Krishnamoorthi campaign, shows the congressman with 42 percent support, far ahead of Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton at 14 percent and Representative Robin Kelly at 7 percent.

Another 4 percent back other candidates, while 29 percent remain undecided. The polling memo says Krishnamoorthi “continues to hold a large lead over his closest opponent” as early voting for the 2026 primary approaches.
The open U.S. Senate race in Illinois is triggered by Senator Dick Durbin’s decision not to seek re-election after nearly three decades in office. His retirement drew a large Democratic field, though Krishnamoorthi, Stratton and Kelly have emerged as the most prominent contenders.
Krishnamoorthi, who has served as the representative for Illinois's 8th Congressional District since 2017, announced his bid for the Senate in May 2025. He has reported raising tens of millions of dollars and initiated statewide television and digital advertising campaigns well in advance of other candidates, providing him with a substantial early advantage.
His platform focuses on economic and cost-of-living issues, including housing affordability, education, healthcare access and prescription drug prices—themes he has been emphasizing across the state as Democrats outline their policy priorities.
The Democratic primary is scheduled for March 17, 2026, followed by the general election on Nov. 3, 2026, in what is expected to be one of the most closely watched Senate races of the cycle.
