Gagandeep Gulati, a 20-year-old from Hounslow, West London, has had his prison sentence for rape increased from six to nine years after the Solicitor General referred the case to the Court of Appeal.

Gulati was convicted in March at Leicester Crown Court of rape, assault by penetration, sexual assault, and sharing or threatening to share an intimate video. On Mar. 28, he was sentenced to six years in a young offenders institution and placed on the sex offender register for life.

On June 19, judges extended his sentence to nine years and imposed concurrent terms of four years and six months for the sexual offences, following a referral under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme by Solicitor General Lucy Rigby KC MP.

The court was told that Gulati found the victim near Jubilee Square in Leicester city centre and coerced her to accompany him to Castle Gardens, where he raped and sexually assaulted her. CCTV footage of his movements helped police locate and arrest him.

During the investigation, Gulati claimed he had been raped and assaulted by the victim. But police discovered he had recorded the attack on his mobile phone and shared the footage with others.

The Attorney General’s Office said in a press release that the Solicitor General described the crime as “sickening”.

“Gagandeep Gulati’s rape of a vulnerable young woman before sharing his awful crimes with other people was sickening,” Lucy Rigby said. “I welcome the court’s decision to increase his sentence following my intervention.”

According to a report by the BBC, Detective Constable Matt Smith said Gulati maintained his denial even under cross-examination.

“Even during cross-examination, Gulati tried to claim the victim had instigated the sexual activity and tried to blame her for the offence,” Smith told the BBC.

“He's shown no remorse for his actions, which was to deliberately target a young woman while she was alone for his own sexual gratification,” he added.

“The victim has shown immense bravery by reliving her ordeal through the trial.”
