An Indian-origin man was charged after allegedly trying to set a passenger on fire aboard a train in Canada.

The accused has been identified as Sukbinder Sogy, 37. The British Columbia Prosecution Service has approved charges of assault with a weapon, mischief causing actual danger to life, and possession of incendiary material following his arrest by Metro Vancouver Transit Police.

The incident occurred on Dec. 16, 2025, shortly before 3 p.m., aboard a SkyTrain traveling from Vancouver to Burnaby. Police said the victim was asleep when Sogy allegedly poured a liquid on his clothing and attempted to ignite it.

Several passengers intervened, removed the suspect from the train at Patterson Station in Burnaby, and held him until officers arrived.

“This was a terrifying ordeal and thankfully, the victim did not suffer any serious physical injuries,” Constable Amanda Steed of Metro Vancouver Transit Police said.

“Transit Police would never ask that anyone place themselves in harm’s way, but we need to acknowledge the bravery and selflessness of the bystanders who rushed to assist the victim and held the suspect until police arrived,” he added.

Sogy remains in custody. Police said his detention order has been extended until his next court appearance on Jan. 21.

According to police, court records show Sogy has an extensive history of violent behavior, including previous cases involving arson and weapons-related offenses. Authorities said his pending legal matters also include allegations of arson, mischief endangering life, and repeated breaches of court orders.
