Germany, with two wins in two matches, sits at the top of the pool. It had earlier beaten Ireland 7-1. It was a high-intensity start, with both teams pushing hard to set the tone. Pressing high, Germany forced India onto the back foot and earned a penalty stroke in the fifth minute. Frerichs converted to give Germany a 1-0 lead.
Despite the early setback, the Indian team settled into its rhythm and created chances of its own but could not find the finish needed to draw level in the first quarter.
The pace stayed high in the second quarter as India pushed for an equalizer. Its forwards kept breaking forward on counterattacks, with Manisha producing the most promising chance, making a strong run that went unused. Germany missed another penalty stroke late in the first half, leaving the score 1-0 at the break.
India opened the second half with more intent, holding possession and pushing into the German circle. It came close to equalizing from a penalty corner but still couldn’t break through. After three intense quarters, the tempo dipped slightly, and India entered the final period still down by a goal.
India pushed with urgency in the fourth quarter and again came close from a penalty corner but couldn’t finish. Germany then doubled its lead with Schönhoff’s tap-in in the 52nd minute. India answered through Bano in the 58th minute off a penalty corner, but Germany restored its two-goal cushion a minute later with Reisenegger’s strike.
India will face Ireland on Dec. 5.
