An Indian-origin student came under scrutiny in Canada after videos surfaced on social media showing him openly firing a firearm in Caledon, north of Brampton.

The videos are triggering public concern, prompting questions about public safety and possible violations of Canadian firearms laws. Several social media users urged authorities to investigate the incident.

The student was identified as Lovepreet Brar, who is reportedly in Canada on a student visa. The footage was amplified by social media user Ethan, who linked the episode to broader concerns around politically and ideologically motivated violent extremism. In a series of posts, he cited warnings from Canadian intelligence agencies about the risks posed by online radicalization and the potential for lone-actor or small-group violence.

After the video drew wider attention, the focus shifted to Canada’s national security context. The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) has repeatedly warned that politically and ideologically motivated violent extremism remains a key national security concern.

The Integrated Terrorism Assessment Centre has also flagged the possibility of attacks targeting crowded public spaces, noting that lone actors or small extremist groups continue to pose risks amid heightened online rhetoric.

The incident has also revived debate around the activities of certain groups operating under the banner of Khalistan. Canadian law enforcement agencies have previously alleged that elements within such networks have been linked to gun-related offenses, drug trafficking, extortion and organized crime, raising broader public safety concerns in the Greater Toronto Area. Authorities, however, have not confirmed any direct link between Brar and these groups.

Social media reaction to the video was sharp. One user wrote on X, “If these were White Canadians, they’d be arrested before they posted the videos.” Another commented, “He was shooting a firearm towards the Forestry Trunk Road north of Waiparous, Alberta. Call the RCMP and report him.” A third asked, “How are these idiots not instantly jailed, fined and deported?”

Canadian authorities have not yet announced whether a formal investigation has been initiated or whether charges have been filed.
