Indian-origin MIT professor elected to NAI for 2025
The 2025 class will be honored at the NAI 15th Annual Conference on June 4 next year in Los Angeles.

Kripa K. Varanasi, an Indian-origin professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), has been named by the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) in the list of nine MIT affiliates as members of the 2025 class of NAI Fellows.
The NAI fellowship is among the highest professional distinctions awarded solely to inventors.
Varanasi, a professor in MIT’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, is recognized for his significant contributions in the field of interfacial science, thermal fluids, electrochemical systems, advanced materials, and manufacturing.
He has been a member of the MIT faculty since 2009 and leads the interdisciplinary Varanasi Research Group, which focuses on understanding physico-chemical and biological phenomena at the interfaces of matter.
Varanasi has also scaled basic research into practical, market-ready technologies and co-founded six companies, including AgZen, Alsym Energy, CoFlo Medical, Dropwise, Infinite Cooling, and LiquiGlide. His companies have been acclaimed for driving innovation across a range of industries.
During his ongoing successful career, Varanasi has received several honors, including the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, DARPA Young Faculty Award, SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award, ASME’s Bergles-Rohsenow Heat Transfer Award and Gustus L. Larson Memorial Award, Boston Business Journal’s 40 Under 40, and MIT’s Frank E. Perkins Award for Excellence in Graduate Advising.
Along with Varanasi, the NAI has named eight other MIT affiliates as members of the 2025 class of NAI Fellows: Ahmad Bahai, Robert William Brown, André DeHon, Shanhui Fan, Jun O. Liu, Marios-Christos Papaefthymiou, Darryll J. Pines, and Yasha Yi.
The 2025 class will be honored and presented with their medals by a senior official of the United States Patent and Trademark Office at the NAI 15th Annual Conference on June 4 next year in Los Angeles.
