Prabhas V. Moghe, an Indian-origin academic leader and current executive vice president for academic affairs at Rutgers University, has been named the sole finalist for the presidency of The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). The decision was made May 6 following a unanimous vote by the University of Texas System Board of Regents.

“The regents and I were very pleased with the extraordinary pool of candidates from top universities across the nation who expressed interest in coming to Texas to lead UT Dallas,” said board chairman Kevin P. Eltife. “Dr. Moghe has a distinguished background as an educator, researcher and administrator. We’re delighted he will guide UT Dallas at it continues its great trajectory.”

Moghe has led academic and research operations across Rutgers’ four campuses and 29 academic units since 2020. Under his leadership, the university saw research funding increase by 40 percent, from $689 million to nearly $1 billion. During the same period, Rutgers rose 22 spots in U.S. News & World Report’s rankings, landing at 15th among public universities.

As EVPAA, Moghe has spearheaded major university-wide initiatives, including the "Roadmaps for Collective Academic Excellence," which emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration in fields like artificial intelligence, public health, policy, and business. He also serves as Rutgers’ representative to the Association of American Universities and is a senior member of the Big Ten Academic Alliance Board of Directors.

“Dr. Moghe’s record of strengthening educational pathways and propelling research agendas forward reflect many of UT Dallas’s strengths and continued aspirations,” said UT system chancellor JB Milliken, who chaired the presidential search advisory committee. “He has a deep appreciation for UTD’s mission and extraordinary ascendancy among top universities.”

Born and raised in India, Moghe earned his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from the University of Bombay. He pursued his PhD in chemical engineering (bioengineering) at the University of Minnesota and completed postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. He joined the Rutgers faculty in 1995 and previously served as provost and executive vice chancellor for research and academic affairs at Rutgers–New Brunswick.

The board’s selection followed recommendations from a search committee comprising UTD faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members, alongside university presidents and regents.

If confirmed after a state-mandated 21-day waiting period, Moghe would take over from Richard Benson, who announced in August his intention to step down at the end of the 2024–2025 academic year. Benson has led the university for nine years, a period marked by significant growth. During his tenure, research spending nearly doubled, enrollment surged to over 30,000 students, a 57 percent increase and more than 2 million square feet of new construction reshaped the campus.
