An Indian national tragically drowned in South Carolina on July 25. Identified as Saumen Kundu by Beaufort County Coroner's Office, the individual was at Sea Pines resort, Hilton Head Island at the time of the incident.
49-year-old Kundu and his son were swimming when they got caught in a rip current. Their calls for help alerted bystanders, who, together with Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue and Shore Beach Service pulled out the father-son duo from the water. However, in spite of lifesaving efforts, Kundu could not be revived, as per the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

In an appeal to exercise caution , the Sheriff's office said on Facebook, "We urge everyone visiting local beaches to take water safety seriously."
They added, "The ocean can be unpredictable, and dangerous conditions, such as rip currents, can appear without warning. Our local National Weather Service office in Charleston.
Responding to the tragic accident, the Consulate General of India in Atlanta expressed its sorrow and said, "We are deeply saddened by the news of a tragic drowning incident near Hilton Head Island that claimed the life of an Indian national."
It also assured coordination with local administration and extended "support to the family during this difficult time".

Phani Krishna Gurrala, a colleague of Kundu, has set up a fundraiser to "support his family during this incredibly difficult time."
