An Indian couple was subjected to a racial attack in Canada late last month by youngsters who hurled abuses at them.

The July 29 episode at Lansdowne Place Mall in Peterborough, captured in a video that has since gone viral shows three yongsters in a pickup truck shouting racial slurs and making obscene gestures. One youth can even be heard threatening to kill the Indian man.

Another hurled derogatory remarks such as “big nose” and “f***ing immigrant.” The victims have also alleged that the group rammed into their vehicle, causing damage.

The video, originally posted by the victim on Facebook, spread rapidly across social platforms, prompting widespread outrage and concern about growing hostility toward Indian immigrants in Canada.

Following an investigation that included reviewing the footage and consulting with the Crown Attorney’s office, the Peterborough Police Service charged an 18-year-old from the City of Kawartha Lakes with uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm. The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 16.

Police said that while Canadian law does not have a specific charge titled “hate crime,” there is a hate-related element to the case that will be addressed during court proceedings.

“Anybody who has seen the video in this case will understand that that type of behaviour is not acceptable in our community, nor any community. Clearly this is not the standard of acceptable behaviour in our city. We encourage residents to continue to report hate bias incidents/crimes that take place in our community,” said Chief Stuart Betts of the Peterborough Police Service.
