An Indian student at Penn State was named the recipient of the 2026 Ardeth and Norman Frisbey International Student Award for undergraduates on March 25.
The award recognizes Joshua Mathew, a senior majoring in electrical engineering in Penn State’s College of Engineering for his leadership and service in student-facing roles supporting both international and domestic students on campus.

As a Global Lion Mentor and global ambassador, Mathew mentored incoming international students from countries including India, Malaysia and China. According to a press release by the university, nominators described him as “an exceptional and dedicated mentor.”
“For Joshua, helping others is truly a way of life,” a nominator said. “As a Global Ambassador, Joshua offered his time to collaborate with internationally focused clubs to plan and execute several cultural events on campus.”
Mathew also served as an international student welcome leader and admissions representative, leading campus tours and orientation sessions for incoming students.
At Penn State Harrisburg, he helped create databases of incoming students to support their transition, the university said.
“As an Admissions Representative, Joshua was a friendly presence and resource to introduce prospective students to Penn State while also representing our international student population as he highlighted the diversity of our campus,” another nominator said.
In addition to his international student work, Mathew has served as a resident assistant at both Penn State Harrisburg and University Park. He has also held student support and technical roles, including auxiliary officer, multimedia specialist, IT services student manager and user support staff.
Penn State said Mathew has also been involved in community service initiatives related to food security, after-school youth programs and ESL classes for adult learners.
“Joshua is precisely the type of holistic student that is worthy of consideration for this award,” another nominator said.
Mathew is expected to graduate in May 2026 with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He has been named to the Dean’s List and is involved in student organizations including IEEE, ITE and NSLS.
