“This recognition celebrates the collective efforts of the pioneers, professionals, and connectors who have influenced the Internet's evolution, to create broader online access and digital inclusion for everyone,” Mohan said in a LinkedIn post.
He added that he remains committed to “enhancing Internet security, fortifying its resilience, promoting multilingual accessibility, and ensuring universal connectivity.”
The Internet Hall of Fame noted that his leadership at the code level continues to influence how societies engage with technology worldwide. The induction ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 17.
A native of Chennai, Mohan has played a pivotal role in shaping the Internet’s global reach. His early work on the transition from ASCII to Unicode made it possible for billions of users to access the Internet in their native languages.
He was instrumental in enabling Arabic script online, which he described as a breakthrough that demonstrated the Internet could support every language. Between 2004 and 2018, he oversaw the revitalization of India’s .IN registry, working with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and NIXI to introduce Indian scripts and launch .BHARAT in 22 languages.
Mohan also co-founded ICANN’s Security and Stability Advisory Committee in 2001 and helped develop Root Zone Language Generation Rules, laying the foundation for non-Latin top-level domains. As chief technology officer of Afilias, he led the deployment of DNS Security Extensions across more than 200 generic top-level domains.
He later established the Universal Acceptance Steering Group to ensure domain names and email addresses function seamlessly across all scripts.
Currently chief strategy officer at Identity Digital, Mohan co-founded the Coalition on Digital Impact to further universal linguistic access. His contributions are backed by 17 Internet technology patents and numerous recognitions, including InfoWorld’s Premier 100 Technology Leaders award, a CIO100 honor, and a Guinness World Record for organizing the largest online safety lesson in 2018.
Mohan holds a bachelor’s of science in electrical engineering from Manipal Academy of Higher Education and a master's in business administration in finance and entrepreneurship from Bharathidasan Institute of Management. He pursued graduate studies in computer science at Drexel University and completed executive programs at Harvard Business School, Harvard Law School’s Program on Negotiation, and INSEAD’s International Directors Programme.
