The Government of India on June 18 launched Operation Sindhu to evacuate Indian nationals from Iran amid escalating hostilities in the region.

“In view of the deteriorating situation as a result of the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel, the Government of India has been taking various steps over the last several days for the safety and security of Indian nationals in Iran,” the  Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

The ministry confirmed that the first phase of the operation has successfully brought back 110 Indian students from northern Iran.

The students were assisted in crossing over to Armenia on June 17 under the supervision of Indian missions in both Iran and Armenia. They departed from Yerevan's Zvartnots International Airport on a special flight and are scheduled to arrive in New Delhi in the early hours of June 19.

The Indian government expressed gratitude to the governments of Iran and Armenia for facilitating the evacuation process. The MEA reiterated that the safety of Indian nationals abroad remains a top priority.

The MEA also informed that the Indian embassy in Tehran has been actively assisting Indian citizens in relocating from high-risk zones to safer regions within Iran, with further evacuation plans underway through available and feasible routes.

Indian nationals in Iran have been advised to remain in contact with the Indian Embassy in Tehran and the 24x7 Control Room established by the MEA in New Delhi. Multiple emergency helpline numbers for both voice and WhatsApp communication have been issued for different regions of Iran including Bandar Abbas and Zahedan.

Iran is home to more than 4,000 Indian nationals, about half of whom are students — many from Jammu and Kashmir enrolled in medical and other professional courses.

This is the latest in a series of evacuation efforts undertaken by India in recent years. In 2023, Operation Ajay was launched to evacuate Indians from Israel during the conflict with Hamas, while in 2022, Operation Ganga facilitated the evacuation of Indian students from Ukraine following the outbreak of war with Russia.
