India beats Uruguay in shootout, to face Spain next

India edged Uruguay 3–1 in a shootout on Dec. 9 to move into the ninth-place playoff at the FIH Hockey Junior Women’s World Cup in Santiago, after the teams played to a 1–1 draw in regulation.

Goalkeeper Nidhi stopped three attempts in the tiebreaker, sealing India’s fourth win in five matches. A 1–3 loss to Germany earlier in the tournament kept India out of the quarterfinals and sent the team into placement play.

Manisha put India ahead in the 19th minute with a long-range strike after sustained pressure and 11 circle entries in the first half. Uruguay, defending deep for most of the match, earned a late lifeline. With two seconds left, Justina Arregui converted a penalty stroke to tie the game and force the shootout.

In the shootout, Purnima Yadav, Ishika and Kanika Siwach scored for India while Nidhi blocked all but one Uruguayan attempt.

India will play Spain next to determine ninth place.
