Independence Day celebrated at India House in Washington DC

The ceremony included a cultural program featuring children from the Indian diaspora.

A flag-hoisting ceremony marked the 79th Independence Day of India at India House in Washington DC on Aug.15, 2025. The event drew members of the Indian diaspora, students, and friends of India.

Ambassador of India to the United States Vinay Kwatra raised the tricolor and addressed the gathering. He highlighted key points from the President of India’s Independence Day eve address to the nation.

The ceremony included a cultural program featuring children from the Indian diaspora. Senior dancers from the Mayor Dance Academy presented a classical Odissi performance, while students of the Gandharva School of Music sang a medley of patriotic songs.

Winners of a painting and essay competition organized by the Embassy for children of the Indian community were also recognized during the celebrations.

An exhibition on the history of the tricolor was displayed to mark the government’s “Har Ghar Tiranga” campaign.

The Embassy posted images of the event on X with the message: “Celebrating the 79th Independence Day of India. Ambassador Shri Vinay Kwatra hoisted the tricolour at India House. Members of the Indian diaspora and friends of India participated in the ceremony.”
