Indian-origin artificial intelligence expert, Trapit Bansal has joined Meta’s newly launched Superintelligence Lab, a strategic initiative aimed at advancing artificial general intelligence (AGI).
Most recently, he served as a researcher at OpenAI, where he was involved in critical work on reinforcement learning and reasoning models, contributing to foundational efforts behind OpenAI’s “o1” series—precursors to today’s widely used large language models. Prior to this, he served as an analyst at Accenture.

His appointment to Meta comes at a time when the company is strengthening its AI research capabilities. The Superintelligence Lab is led by prominent individuals in the tech industry, including Alexandr Wang (former CEO of Scale AI) and Nat Friedman (former CEO of GitHub). The lab’s stated objective is to build frontier AI systems capable of human-level intelligence and beyond.
Bansal expressed his enthusiasm for the new role via a X (formerly twitter) post, stating, “Thrilled to be joining Meta! Superintelligence is now in sight.”
While reports have circulated suggesting that Bansal received a signing package worth approximately ₹800 crore (over $100 million), this figure remains unconfirmed. Meta has not commented on specific compensation details.
Bansal completed his undergraduate studies in mathematics and statistics at IIT Kanpur before pursuing a Ph.D. in machine learning at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Notably, he interned in tech giants such as Google, Microsoft, and Facebook.
