House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Oct. 25 endorsed Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral race.
Describing him as a leader committed to tackling the city’s affordability crisis and ensuring safety for all New Yorkers, Jefferies said, “I support him and the entire citywide Democratic ticket in the general election.”

Jeffries praised Mamdani’s plan to confront gentrification and housing displacement, saying, “ I support our nominee's strong commitment to building a City where everyday New Yorkers can afford to live. By necessity, this must involve a meaningful partnership with the private sector to dramatically increase the supply of affordable homes.”
He also highlighted Mamdani’s focus on public safety, noting his commitment to retain Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch and ensure protection for Jewish, Black, and Latino communities.
“The Assemblyman has explicitly made clear that public safety for these communities will be a top priority,” Jeffries said. “That is the approach that this moment requires.”
Addressing the broader political context, Jeffries warned of rising Republican extremism and said Democrats must stand united in response. “As with any Mayor, there will be areas of agreement and areas of principled disagreement. Yet, the stakes are existential,” he said.
He added that Donald Trump and congressional Republicans had launched an unparalleled attack on the economy, stripped his constituents of healthcare, misused the Justice Department against the state’s Attorney General, and directed masked agents to cruelly target law-abiding immigrant families.
“The communities I represent in Brooklyn are being devastated by this extreme version of the Republican Party,” he continued. “In this environment, we have a clear obligation to push back against the national nightmare being visited on the American people by Republican extremism.”
Responding to the endorsement, Mamdani said “I welcome Leader Jeffries’ support and look forward to delivering a city government and building a Democratic Party relentlessly committed to an affordability agenda — and to fighting Trump’s authoritarianism.”
This campaign has always been about bringing people together to improve the quality of life for every New Yorker.

Jeffries’ endorsement comes after months of speculation about whether the House Democratic leader would back Mamdani, a prominent progressive who redefined the city’s political debate on housing, policing, and inequality.
The endorsement marks a significant moment of party unity after a tense Democratic primary season that saw Mamdani defeat former Governor Andrew Cuomo for the nomination.
