Hockey: India routs Pakistan 7-1 for its fourth win in the FIH Pro League

The third quarter saw Indians at their scoring best. It started with an award of a penalty stroke after Indian forwards were thwarted.

India routed Pakistan 7-1 for its fourth win in the FIH Pro League in London on June 26. The win, India’s second in as many games against Pakistan, has moved it to the seventh spot ahead of Spain. India has now 17 points while Spain has 16 from 15 games.

India plays its last game against England on June 28.

For India, seven players made the result sheet as goal scorers. Sukhjeet Singh, Harmanpreet Singh, Hardik Singh, Jugraj Singh, Abhishek, Raj Kumar Pal and Dilpreet Singh were the scorers while Abu Mahmood was the lone scorer for Pakistan.

Pakistan, even after 15 games, remains the only team without a point and faces relegation to the FIH Nations Cup.

After a nail-biting finish in the first match, Pakistan started as if it was out to avenge its earlier 3-4 defeat. It took the lead in the first quarter, when Aby Mohammed scored from a penalty corner in the 13th minute.

Stung by the reverse, India launched a massive counteroffensive from the beginning of the second quarter. Fifth minute in the second quarter, Sukhjeet Singh, restored parity with a brilliant strike that foxed the entire Pakistani defence.

It was skipper Harmanpreet Singh who put India ahead with a brilliant drag flick that followed the fifth penalty corner India earned in the 27th minute. When the teams broke for the half time, India was ahead 2-1.

Jugraj Singh, another drag flick specialist in the Indian team, had the entire Pakistani defense beaten with his neat flick to make the score 4-1 in the 35th minute. It was Abhishek who scored goal of the match in the 41st minute to make the score 5-1. And before the third quarter ended, Raj Pal Kumar made it 6-1.

Inform forward Dilpreet Singh, who scored both the goals in the drawn game against England yesterday, added his name to the score sheet with a brilliant goal in the 54th minute to make it 7-1.
