Hindus of DFW host civic Diwali celebration in Dallas

More than 120 community leaders and civic officials joined for a night of culture and civic unity.

The Hindus of DFW coalition hosted its annual Diwali – Sparkle of Joy Civic Reception on Nov. 5, bringing together civic leaders, Hindu American representatives, interfaith partners, and international guests for an evening focused on cultural celebration and civic engagement.

Mayors, mayor pro tems, and council members from more than 15 cities across the Dallas–Fort Worth area attended, along with county commissioners from Dallas, Collin, and Ellis counties. Coppell Mayor Wes May delivered the keynote address, calling for “unity and collaboration across the diverse communities that live together in the DFW Metroplex.”

Collin County Commissioner Susan Fletcher presented a proclamation recognizing Sewa Diwali, a community food drive organized by Hindu groups with a goal of donating over one million pounds of food to those in need.

New York State Assemblywoman Jennifer Rajkumar, the first Hindu American elected to the New York Legislature, spoke about how her upbringing shaped her commitment to public service and empowerment. “My Hindu values taught me to serve others and build bridges,” she said.

Former Indian Minister of State Meenakshi Lekhi addressed the gathering, reflecting on shared democratic ideals and values such as meritocracy, innovation, and entrepreneurship that connect India and the United States.

The reception opened with a Ganesha Pooja, followed by a Diya lighting ceremony and Shank Naad. Cultural performances included a Bharatanatyam recital by students of the Ellora Center for Performing Arts and classical music presentations by the Indian Fine Arts Academy DFW and Sangeetha Bhaarathi.

Pankaj Kumar delivered the welcome address, emphasizing the Hindu American community’s contributions to the local economy and civic life. Gitesh Desai of Sewa International offered the vote of thanks before guests shared a dinner catered by Delhi Lounge.

Hindus of DFW represents over 70 Hindu American organizations and 350,000 community members across the Metroplex, uniting temples, nonprofits, cultural institutions, and local businesses in civic and social initiatives.
