'Yoga helps millions find calm and purpose': UN chief António Guterres

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, hails yoga as "truly universal" in a social media post celebrating the 12th International Yoga Day

International Day of Yoga (IDY) is celebrated annually on June 21, following a 2014 resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly recognizing yoga's universal benefits for health and well-being. 

IDY 2026 has brought together millions of participants worldwide, reaffirming the UN-backed observance as a global movement promoting physical, mental, and spiritual wellness.

In his yoga day message, shared on X, Guterres said, "From its deep roots in ancient India, yoga has become truly universal, helping millions of people of all faiths & cultures find calm, build strength & live with purpose."

The UN Secretary General also highlighted the significance of the practice and noted that it teaches "mindfulness, respect & care for ourselves, for our planet & for one another."

As UN Secretary-General, he has regularly marked the International Day of Yoga by encouraging people worldwide to embrace yoga's values of balance, resilience, and unity, reflecting the spirit of the UN-backed global observance.

Concluding his message, Guterres spotlighted the theme of this year's IDY celebrations, 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” which highlights yoga's role in promoting longevity, mobility, mental well-being, and active living across all stages of life.

He said, "On this #YogaDay, let's extend that care to the older members of our human family & build a world where every generation can lead a healthy life."
