The United States Consulate General in Mumbai has issued a cautionary advisory for B1/B2 visitor visa holders on Jan. 8, alerting them that engaging in unauthorised employment could lead to deportation and also a potential permanent ban on future entry into the country.
A B1/B2 visa is a non-immigrant visitor visa for temporary stays, combining the B1 (Business) and B2 (Tourism/Medical Treatment) categories for a single document.

It allows entry for business meetings, conferences (B1), or vacation, visiting family, and medical care (B2), but strictly prohibits employment or study leading to a degree, requiring proof of intent to return home after the short, temporary visit.
In an official post on LinkedIn, the Consulate General asked those who are B1/B2 holders to know the rules before making any plan for travel.
"Know the rules before you travel. A B1/B2 visitor visa can be used to conduct business meetings and negotiate contracts, but you need a different visa to work. Unauthorized employment can lead to deportation and/or a permanent ban from entering America in the future," the post read.
The US Embassy in India has released a video on X, presenting two characters, Nick and Neha, who inform what could happen if one extends their visit without taking permission.
