Indian American urologist Dipen Parekh has been named the inaugural Magnier Endowed Chair in Urology at the University of Miami (UMiami) Miller School of Medicine, recognizing his contributions to cancer care, surgical innovation, and academic leadership.

The Magnier Endowed Chair, established by the Desai Sethi Foundation, provides dedicated resources to support research, innovation, patient care, and education. The foundation founded the Desai Sethi Urology Institute in 2022, and the chair honors philanthropist John Magnier for contributions to international business and philanthropy.

Parekh serves as chief executive officer of the University of Miami Health System and executive vice president for health affairs at UMiami. He is also the founding director of the Desai Sethi Urology Institute, professor and chair of the Department of Urology at the Miller School of Medicine, executive dean for clinical affairs, director of robotic surgery, and holder of the Victor A. Politano Endowed Chair in Urology.

Since joining UMiami in 2012, Parekh has performed more than 6,000 robotic urologic cancer procedures worldwide and led key clinical trials. He has expanded robotic surgery programs, strengthened the international profile of the Desai Sethi Urology Institute, recruited physician-scientists and promoted multidisciplinary approaches to complex urologic conditions, including kidney transplantation.

UMiami president and chief executive officer Joseph Echevarria said, "Dr. Parekh leads with uncommon clarity, humility, and purpose. He is a physician who never loses sight of the patient and a leader who understands how innovation, teamwork, and compassion come together to redefine what is possible in medicine."

"This chair recognizes not only his extraordinary accomplishments, but the future he continues to build for UHealth and the communities we serve," he added.

Stuart Miller, chair of the UHealth Board of Directors and a member and past chair of the University of Miami Board of Trustees, said, "An endowed chair is one of the highest expressions of a university’s values. It represents trust in a leader and confidence that today’s investment will shape tomorrow’s breakthroughs."

"As the Magnier Endowed Chair in Urology, Dipen is the embodiment of what an endowed chair stands for—excellence at the highest level of his field, transformative leadership and mentorship, an innovative spirit focused on what’s next, and an impeccable work ethic that elevates those around him," he added.

Parekh said the endowed chair would enable broader impact across medicine and community service. "The Magnier Endowed Chair in Urology provides the flexibility for its recipients to dream bigger, to think broader, and to serve the community with purpose, excellence, dignity, empathy, and humility," he said.

"This honor is not mine alone. It is a tribute to the extraordinary teamwork and vision that define our University of Miami family," he added.

Born in Mumbai, Parekh earned his medical degree from the University of Poona in 1990 and completed postgraduate training in general surgery and urology at the University of Mumbai. He later completed a urologic oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, undertook residency training that included time at Vanderbilt University, and earned a master’s degree from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.
