Sikh man charged in Canada extortion and firearm investigation

Singh has been detained by the court. His next court appearance is set for May 22, 2026.

Surrey Police Service charged 22-year-old Sikh man Gursewak Singh with multiple charges of extortion and violence involving a firearm in Surrey and Abbotsford, SPS announced May 19.

On Dec. 14, 2025, at around 2:30 a.m., Surrey Police Service frontline officers responded to reports of gunfire at a business in the 8000 block of 120 Street in Surrey. Police confirmed the building had been damaged by gunshots.

The business had previously received extortion threats, but no injuries were reported among staff members who were inside at the time.

A day later, on Dec. 15, officers responded to a business parking lot in the 12400 block of Old Yale Road in Surrey after two vehicles were set on fire, causing major damage. Police said the business had also received extortion threats.

On Dec. 17, 2025, officers from the Abbotsford Police Department arrested Gursewak Singh immediately following a shooting incident on King Road.

Upon investigation, SPS’ Organized Crime Unit, working in collaboration with Abbotsford Police Department investigators, identified Singh as a common suspect in all three incidents.

Gursewak Singh has been charged with multiple Criminal Code offenses, including discharging a firearm while aware others may have been present, extortion involving a firearm, arson, unlawful possession of firearms, and occupying a vehicle knowing a firearm was present.

As part of the ongoing investigation, Gursewak Singh has also been charged by Abbotsford police with additional offenses, including extortion using a firearm, possession of a loaded prohibited firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and occupying a vehicle while knowing a firearm was present.

Gursewak Singh has been detained by the court. His next court appearance is set for May 22, 2026.
