Sikh leaders gather in Houston to highlight community civic role

The program featured a public panel titled “The Spirit of Seva: Sikh Reflections on the Common Good,” which was attended by nearly 50 community members.

The Sikh Coalition and Interfaith America convened nearly 20 national Sikh leaders in Houston on Aug. 15 to discuss religious liberty, civic engagement and cross-cultural bridge-building as part of the upcoming “America’s 250th” commemorations.

Nearly 20 Sikh leaders from across the U.S. gathered in Houston for a collaborative event organized by the Sikh Coalition and Interfaith America. They discussed the Sikh community’s role in promoting religious liberty, fostering interfaith bridge-building and supporting democracy ahead of the “America’s 250th” commemorations.

The program featured a public panel titled “The Spirit of Seva: Sikh Reflections on the Common Good,” which was attended by nearly 50 community members from the civic, interfaith and business sectors. The public conversation was moderated by Sikh Coalition Executive Director Harman Singh.

The panelists included attorney Harpreet Singh Mokha, United Sikh Movement Executive Director Harsimran Kaur and Sikh Coalition Co-Founder Jasmit Singh.

“This weekend was truly special, and hearing all of the speakers has made me feel hopeful for the future of our Panth and has motivated me to act with the same intentions in my own work,” said Aekem Singh of Boston, Massachusetts. “I am grateful to the Sikh Coalition and Interfaith America for providing us this space, and I look forward with excitement to future collaborations sparked from our conversations.”

The Sikh Coalition also hosted local outreach programs, including a “Know Your Rights” session tailored for Sikh truck drivers and visits to the Sikh National Center and The Sikh Center of the Gulf Coast Area. Discussions focused on crucial community challenges, particularly trucking regulations and civil rights concerns regarding transnational repression.
