Rini Sampath / Handout
Rini Sampath, an Indian American candidate in the race for mayor of Washington, D.C., has publicly challenged her exclusion from an upcoming mayoral debate hosted by FOX 5 DC and Georgetown University.
According to the organizers, the May 18 debate will feature Democratic mayoral candidates Gary Goodweather, Ward 4 Councilmember Janeese Lewis-George and former At-large Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie.

Sampath, who asserted that her campaign met the stated eligibility requirements to participate in the debate, wrote in a social media post, “We qualified. Why won’t FOX5 and Georgetown let us into their debate?” The post included a screenshot of an email from representatives of the two debate organizers, informing her campaign that no exceptions would be made to previously established eligibility criteria.
According to the email shared by Sampath, organizers said the participation standards had been “established and publicly communicated more than eight weeks ago” and that the decision was based on “objective, publicly verifiable benchmarks and filing deadlines.” The message stated that out of fairness to all candidates, they would not accommodate requests from individual campaigns to modify those criteria.
Sampath’s campaign, however, has suggested that it satisfied those requirements and has framed the exclusion as a denial of access to a public platform at a key point in the race. Her post quickly drew attention among supporters, who argued that all qualifying candidates should be included in public debates, particularly in a local election where voter awareness remains a major issue.
- @RiniSampath is the first South Asian candidate in DC history to qualify for the mayoral ballot and has reached the 1,000 donation threshold identified by @fox5dc and @Georgetown . We urge the debate organizers to apply their criteria fairly, and include her in the debate. https://t.co/WIi4HwMkga

Indian American Impact, publicly backed Sampath’s position. In a statement posted on social media, the group said that Rini Sampath is the first South Asian candidate in Washington, D.C. history to qualify for the mayoral ballot and had also reached the 1,000-donation threshold identified by FOX 5 DC and Georgetown University as part of their debate criteria. “We urge the debate organizers to apply their criteria fairly, and include her in the debate,” the organization said.
Meanwhile, Sampath has positioned herself as a political outsider, challenging established figures. Her campaign centers around a "Fix the Basics" platform focused on improving infrastructure, emergency response times, and city services.
If elected, she has vowed to prioritize safer streets, reliable services, accountable government, and a lower cost of living.
The Washington D.C. primary elections to select party nominees will be held on June 16, 2026.
