Dr Nirav Shah. / Shah for Maine
Indian American Democrat and Maine gubernatorial candidate Nirav Shah has presented a comprehensive blueprint aimed at countering what he describes as “harmful and outright dangerous policies” under President Donald Trump’s administration.
According to Shah, the plan aims to safeguard Maine from federal overreach and policy rollbacks.

The plan lays out a series of proposed state-level initiatives that Shah says he would pursue if elected governor in 2026.
Shah, a physician, lawyer, and former director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, has argued he will use every tool available under state law to protect Maine residents from federal policies that he asserts undermine democracy, public health, civil rights, environmental protections, and community well-being.
By recalling his previous work for the community during the COVID-19 pandemic, he framed the new proposals as a continuation of that effort.
The major policy planks and key elements of his plan include defending Maine’s elections by safeguarding voter data, strengthening cybersecurity, defending state authority in court, and protecting election workers from threats and intimidation.
Donald Trump is a threat to our country, our state, our democracy, and our values. Federal actions are putting our elections at risk, undermining reproductive rights, weakening environmental protections, targeting New Mainers, and cutting support for schools and rural hospitals.… pic.twitter.com/hywfkM4whp

He also plans on protecting Maine from ICE abuse by ending voluntary state cooperation with mass deportation efforts, strengthening the limited-cooperation law, requiring visible identification, prohibiting masked enforcement actions, and mandating body cameras and clear conduct standards for all law enforcement operating in Maine.
Safeguarding access to vaccines and protecting Maine’s environment and natural resources are also included in his plans.
Shah also emphasized on protecting Maine’s right to choose, with special regard to reproductive care, and strengthening maternal health programs.
He also aims to expand special education funding and push back against federal attempts to dictate curriculum or threaten Maine schools.
Shah officially launched his gubernatorial campaign in October 2025, and the primary elections in Maine are scheduled for Jun. 9, 2026, with the general election set for Nov. 3.
