U.S.-made Tamil drama ‘Illam’ blends roots and reach

Tamil family drama 'Illam', made in the United States by Sruthi Subramanian, explores themes of acceptance and letting go within a household.

The film is written, directed, and produced by Indian women, in their early twenties, who are deeply passionate about storytelling and about creating work that bridges cultures while remaining emotionally authentic.

Talking about the film, the film's Director and Producer, Subramanian, said, "While culturally rooted, the emotions and dynamics transcend geography and resonate across generations," highlighting the film's ability to connect universally with audiences worldwide, bridging cultural divides and evoking timeless human experiences like family bonds, love, loss, and identity struggles that feel relatable regardless of one's background or location.

Awaiting a digital release in the coming months, the film has won multiple awards and has been selected at numerous international film festivals, which the director describes as an "incredibly encouraging" experience.

The film won the Best U.S. Short Film award at the Makizhmithran International Film Festival and at the Rohip International Film Festival. The film also bagged the Best International Short Film award at the Poombukar Independent Film Festival.

The film was also shortlisted at NanoCon International Film Festival's 'International Short Film award'.
