Nirav Shah / Shah for Maine
Democrat Nirav Shah raised $275,000 within the first week of launching his campaign for governor of Maine.
According to his campaign, contributions came from residents across all 16 of Maine’s counties, reflecting what it described as “broad statewide enthusiasm” for Shah’s candidacy.

“I’m humbled and energized by the support showing up from all corners of our state,” Shah, former Principal Deputy Director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a statement.
“When we launched this campaign, I made a promise to honor what works, fix what doesn’t, and deliver results for all Mainers. These numbers tell me that Maine people believe in our vision of leadership to listen, unite, and build towards solutions, together,” he added.
Donors to the campaign include small business owners, educators, healthcare workers, and community members who, the campaign said, trust Shah’s leadership to deliver results for Maine.
The announcement follows the campaign’s first volunteer meeting on Oct. 26 evening, where more than 70 Mainers participated. In his campaign announcement on Oct. 20, Shah said Maine is “at a crossroads” and called for pragmatic leadership focused on “fixing housing, funding healthcare, feeding kids, and fueling growth—while fighting the overreaches of the Trump administration.”
As Director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Shah led the state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Appointed by Governor Janet Mills in 2019, he was credited with rebuilding the agency after years of budget cuts and overseeing one of the country’s fastest vaccine rollouts.
Before leading the Maine CDC, Shah built a career that bridged law, economics, and public health. Born in 1977 in Wisconsin to Indian immigrant parents, he earned degrees in psychology and biology from the University of Louisville.
After serving in national public health leadership roles, he returned to Maine, where he now teaches at Colby College.
Shah lives in Brunswick with his wife, Kara, and their German Shepherd, Fritz.
