New York Attorney General candidate and Indian American Republican Saritha Komatireddy tightened her attack on incumbent New York Attorney General Letitia James, this time focusing on safety concerns in public housing.

Inching toward the November election against James, Komatireddy has leveled multiple charges against James over the past few months, accusing James of being soft on crime and criminals.

Public housing and addressing other housing challenges stand as one of the key pillars of James' campaign and are also among her key focuses during her ongoing tenure.

Komatireddy attacked James' housing programs and said that the houses occupied by the poorest sections of society are infested with drugs and crime, accusing the incumbent AG of failing to ensure the safety of these communities.

Komatireddy said, "I was just talking to an elderly Puerto Rican couple and they asked me, what is your position on public housing? My position is simple. We need to make sure it's safe."

She continued, "The truth is NYCHA (New York City Housing Authority) is the worst landlord in New York and there's more than 70 public housing authorities throughout the state."

The NYCHA is run by the NYCHA Board, which is composed of seven members appointed by NYC Mayor Democrat Zohran Mamdani. The mayor also designates one of the members as the chair.

Highlighting the action her electoral rival should have undertaken, Komatireddy said, "The Attorney General should be making sure that housing, especially the housing that's there for the most vulnerable and least fortunate in our communities, is safe."

She added, "But I know firsthand as a federal prosecutor that hardworking New Yorkers are constantly terrorized by drugs and crime in the housing projects. We can put an end to that if we have an Attorney General who actually prosecutes crime."

Komatireddy is deputy chief of appeals at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York.

An Indian American attorney and former federal prosecutor, she is the Republican nominee challenging incumbent Letitia James for New York attorney general in 2026.
