The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) has launched a nationwide effort to change how Ancient India and Dharma traditions are taught in American classrooms with funding received by the Guru Krupa Foundation.

The initiative aims to move instruction away from legacy textbooks and toward updated, research-based materials designed to reflect current scholarship and classroom needs.

“The impact of this grant extends well beyond the classroom and into the heart of civic life. With the Guru Krupa Foundation’s support, we were able to develop a comprehensive suite of educational materials, including 13 specialized primers and multiple lesson plans, all rigorously vetted by a board of respected university scholars,” said Vijay Satnarine, senior director of education strategy at HAF.

"These resources have gained significant institutional trust, highlighted by their inclusion as suggested materials by two State Departments of Education," he added.

The initiative has already reached more than 600 teachers across the United States and is projected to impact about 1.9 million students over the course of their education. It focuses on providing classroom-ready resources grounded in current scholarship and designed for use by high school educators.

HAF said the funding also supported cultural competency training for law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, as part of efforts to improve understanding of Hindu American communities.

The partnership has also expanded HAF’s digital reach. Educational videos linked to the project have recorded more than 100,000 views, alongside the launch of an online resource hub focused on pluralism and Dharma traditions.

The Guru Krupa Foundation is a private philanthropic foundation incorporated in New York State that provides grants across education, basic needs, social welfare, arts and culture, spirituality, and environmental initiatives.

Its funding supports projects in the United States and India, including education programs, midday meal initiatives, and partnerships with nonprofit organizations working on literacy, nutrition, and community services.
