Indian American scholar, podcaster, and writer Indu Viswanathan has announced the publication of her debut book that examines the experience of growing up Hindu in the United States.

Viswanathan said the book ‘Hindu at Heart: Education, Faith, and What It Means to Belong in America' examines how American public schools have shaped Hindu American identity.

According to her, the book addresses topics such as textbook portrayals of Hinduism, classroom encounters with cultural difference, and the role of Hindu Americans in broader conversations around pluralism and democracy. It draws on her academic research and professional work in K-12 education, along with archival research and interviews.

Viswanathan is affiliated with The Futures of Knowing Project and focuses on issues including the Hindu American experience in public education, teacher education, dharma, and community partnerships.

“I wrote this book during a time when conversations about religion, immigration, and belonging have become increasingly strained,” she said, adding that she hoped the work would bring “careful listening and a measure of hope” to those discussions.

The book also extends Viswanathan’s “Hindu at Heart” podcast series, produced with the Hindu American Foundation, which features conversations on Hindu American identity, faith, and community.

Signed author editions from the first premium trade print run are available for pre-order through her website, with shipping expected to begin in late March. Paperback and e-book editions are scheduled for global release on Amazon in May 2026.
