Nalini Joshi to head Sydney quantum security initiative

Indian-origin mathematician Nalini Joshi will lead a new $35 million quantum security centre at the University of Sydney, funded under Australia’s latest research grants round.

The centre is one of two University of Sydney initiatives to receive $35 million each through the Australian Research Council Centres of Excellence program, part of a $279 million federal investment announced this year. The university secured the joint-highest number of centres nationwide.

Joshi will head the ARC Centre of Excellence in Mathematics for Quantum Era Security and Trust, known as MathQuEST. The centre will focus on the growing vulnerability of current cybersecurity systems as quantum computing advances, alongside mathematical approaches to trust and verification in artificial intelligence.

A Chair of Applied Mathematics at the University of Sydney, Joshi has recently expanded her work into post-quantum cryptography, which is expected to be a central research theme of the new centre.

Born in Burma and raised in Australia, Joshi completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Sydney before earning a PhD in computational and applied mathematics from Princeton University. Her research spans mathematical modelling of physical systems, quantum phenomena, and large-scale structures in astronomy.

Over her career, Joshi has received wide recognition, including election as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and appointment as an Officer of the Order of Australia for her contributions to mathematical science and higher education.

Beyond research, she is known for her work on equity in science. She played a key role in advancing women’s participation in STEM and was a founding co-chair of the Science in Australia Gender Equity initiative, which now includes universities and research institutions across the country.
