Mamdani said that the next few months, till the day he assumes office, will be spent in bringing in "government veterans with proven track records, policy experts from around the country and the world and working people who know better than anyone what our neighborhoods deserve."
Describing the appointments, he said, "These appointments will be driven by excellence, integrity, and a hunger to solve old problems with new solutions."
Mamdani also reiterated the cornerstone of his campaign and said that the new administration would make the city affordable, while staying accountable to the people it serves and the new appointees will help implement this idea better.

Mamdani announced that he would be assuming office on Jan. 1, 2026, on New Year's day. He went on to describe the day as "a new era for this (New York) city."
Mamdani was elected to New York's Mayoral office at the age of 34, on November 4, by defeating Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa with a focus on affordability and other socialist campaign promises. His victory is unique as he becomes the city's first Muslim and South Asian mayor.
Nov. 4 also marked a night of significant overall gains for the Democrats, a major shift before the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. President Donald Trump, however, distanced himself from the setbacks quoting political experts and saying that the reason for the defeat was the government shutdown and the absence of Trump's name on the ballot.
