Major League Baseball (MLB) has named Indian cricket star and T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav as its ambassador in India, marking a major step in the league's efforts to grow baseball's presence in the country.

MLB announced that as ambassador Yadav will collaborate on fan engagement initiatives, original content and marquee events aimed at introducing baseball to Indian audiences.

The announcement coincides with the renewal of MLB's broadcast partnership with JioStar, ensuring continued live coverage of games and league content across India.

As part of the partnership, Yadav will participate in MLB events in India and the United States, including MLB All-Star Week in Philadelphia from July 10-14. He will also work with the league to create original content and fan engagement campaigns highlighting the similarities between cricket and baseball.

“One of the best things about sport is that it brings people together, no matter where they're from. I'm excited to partner with Major League Baseball and be part of its journey in India. I look forward to learning more about the game myself and helping more fans discover the energy, excitement and culture that make baseball something else,” Yadav said in a statement.

Jeremiah Yolkut, MLB's senior vice president of global operations and events, said Yadav's popularity and influence make him an ideal ambassador to help the league connect with Indian sports fans.

"Suryakumar is one of the most recognized athletes in India, with an ability to connect with millions of fans across the country. Combined with our renewed partnership with JioStar, we are building a powerful foundation to further expand baseball's reach throughout the country,” Yolkut said.

The announcement follows MLB's strategic partnership with RISE Worldwide, the exclusive management agency for Yadav and a wholly owned subsidiary of Reliance Industries, aimed at supporting the growth of baseball in India.

MLB also confirmed the extension of its media rights agreement with JioStar, which will continue as the league's official broadcast partner in India across television and digital platforms. The deal includes coverage of the MLB All-Star Game, select regular-season games and the postseason, culminating in the World Series.
