On June 8, 2026, the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Houston (IACCGH), in partnership with the Greater Houston Partnership (GHP), hosted Leadership in Orbit: A Distinguished CEO Fireside Conversation featuring Dr. Jonathan Cirtain, CEO and president of Axiom Space, in conversation with Steve Kean, president and CEO of the Greater Houston Partnership.
More than 160 business, civic, and international leaders attended the sold-out event, reflecting the growing interest in Houston’s expanding role in the global space economy.
The discussion comes as the commercial space industry continues to gain momentum, highlighted by the first anniversary of Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) on June 25, underscoring the rapid advances being made in commercial human spaceflight and international collaboration.
As Steve Kean noted: “In Houston, we know how to build and operate in some of the world’s most demanding environments — from energy and healthcare to aerospace. That experience uniquely positions our region to lead the next phase of commercial space exploration and habitation.”
Moderated by Steve Kean, the discussion provided an inside look at how Axiom Space is helping transform space exploration from a government-led endeavor into a thriving commercial industry.
Dr. Cirtain described Axiom Space’s mission as expanding humanity’s presence in space through astronaut training, commercial missions to the International Space Station, development of a commercial space station, and next-generation spacesuit technology. To date, Axiom Space has trained and flown astronauts from around the world, helping create new opportunities for scientific research, international collaboration, and commercial innovation.
One notable example discussed was the recent mission involving Indian Air Force Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, whose participation generated significant scientific interest and public engagement across India. The mission highlighted the growing intersection of space exploration, education, diplomacy, and economic development.
Audience at the event / HandoutWhen asked why Axiom Space chose Houston as its headquarters, Dr. Cirtain’s answer was straightforward: Houston remains the world’s center for human space exploration.
With the presence of NASA’s Johnson Space Center, the Houston Spaceport, a deep engineering talent pool, and decades of experience managing complex industrial systems, the region offers advantages few locations can match. Houston’s strengths in energy, healthcare, advanced manufacturing, and technology are increasingly converging to support the commercial space sector.
The discussion also addressed workforce development, talent attraction, and the importance of building a robust supplier ecosystem capable of supporting the rapid growth of commercial space activities.
Beyond human spaceflight, Dr. Cirtain highlighted emerging opportunities in space-based computing and research.
Advances in communications, power generation, and computing technologies are enabling the processing of vast amounts of data directly in space. These capabilities have implications for Earth observation, communications, national security, climate science, and commercial applications that are only beginning to emerge.
The conversation also explored how research conducted in microgravity environments could lead to breakthroughs in healthcare and pharmaceutical development. Such applications demonstrate that investments in space exploration can generate tangible benefits for life on Earth while opening entirely new industries for future growth.
As Dr. Jonathan Cirtain noted: “Axiom Space isn’t just building a space station; we’re pioneering an orbital settlement in low-Earth orbit to foster discovery, innovation, and advancements benefiting everyone on Earth. Through international collaboration, we’re creating new opportunities in space that will help redefine our future.”
A recurring theme throughout the discussion was the growing importance of international collaboration. Consul General of India in Houston, D.C. Manjunath, highlighted expanding opportunities for cooperation between the United States and India in the commercial space sector, while Dr. Cirtain emphasized how Axiom Space missions create pathways for scientific, educational, and economic partnerships across the globe.
These collaborations strengthen innovation ecosystems, accelerate research, and position Houston as a gateway for international engagement in the rapidly growing space economy.
In closing, Dr. Cirtain outlined Axiom Space’s long-term vision: expanding commercial access to space, advancing space-based research and computing, and creating lasting benefits for humanity through innovation and discovery.
The discussion reinforced a powerful message for Houston’s business community: the future of space exploration is being driven by entrepreneurship, private investment, and global collaboration — and Houston is uniquely positioned to lead that future.
As attendees continued networking after the program, one conclusion was clear: Houston’s next chapter as a global innovation hub is already taking shape. With commercial space emerging as a major driver of economic growth, investment, and technological advancement, the region is uniquely positioned to help shape humanity’s future beyond Earth.
