Republican candidate for New York attorney general Saritha Komatireddy on Aug. 18 announced that she has accepted the Public Campaign Finance Board’s invitation to participate in an official debate hosted by Spectrum News as she renewed her challenge to incumbent Democratic Attorney General Letitia James to face her in debates across New York state.

Komatireddy previously challenged James to a series of debates across the state, including in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Utica, Albany and Binghamton, giving voters outside New York City the opportunity to hear directly from both candidates.

“I have accepted the PCFB debate, and I hope Letitia James will do the same,” said Komatireddy.

“But one debate is not enough for a race this important. New Yorkers from Buffalo to Long Island deserve the opportunity to hear directly from both candidates about our records, our priorities, and what we will do as attorney general.”

Komatireddy, a former federal prosecutor, criticized James’ tenure as attorney general, accusing her of focusing on national media headlines rather than answering directly to local constituents.

“Attorney General James has spent years using this office to make national headlines. Now she should be willing to defend her record before the people she was elected to serve. I am once again challenging her to debate me across New York state,” she said.

Komatireddy has called for debates focused on the issues facing New Yorkers, including public safety, homelessness and mental illness, Medicaid and taxpayer fraud, corruption, and the proper role of the attorney general’s office.
