Johns Hopkins has appointed Sanjay Desai, chief academic officer of the American Medical Association, as vice dean for education at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
In his new role, Desai will oversee all education and training programs across the School of Medicine, including doctor of medicine, doctoral, residency, postdoctoral, and online programs. He will work with institutional leaders to advance educational innovation, strengthen academic standards, and enhance the learner experience across the continuum of medical education.

Desai brings national experience in shaping medical education policy and practice. At the American Medical Association, he has led a broad innovation portfolio focused on precision education, including the use of artificial intelligence in collaboration with a consortium of medical schools and health systems.
His responsibilities have also included oversight of accreditation-related activities linked to the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, national policy development across the educational continuum, and administration of the continuing medical education credit system.
Before joining the AMA in October 2021, Desai held several senior academic leadership roles at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, including Myron L. Weisfeldt Professor of Medicine, director of the Osler Medical Residency, and vice chair for education in the department of medicine. He continues to practice clinically as an intensive care unit physician.

Commenting on his appointment in a LinkedIn post, Desai said he was “sincerely grateful and humbled” for the opportunity to help shape the future of education in medicine and biomedical science at Johns Hopkins, calling it an institution with deep professional and personal significance.
He also expressed gratitude for his four years at the American Medical Association, where he collaborated with colleagues committed to advancing medical education.
Widely recognized across academic medicine, health policy, and clinical practice, Desai’s research focuses on generating high-quality data to inform policy and practice in medical education.
He has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications, including articles in The New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA, and has received multiple honors, including the Professors’ Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Desai has also served in national leadership and advisory roles, including on committees of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine.
He previously chaired the executive committee of the iCOMPARE study group, whose findings on duty hours in graduate medical education were published in a series of New England Journal of Medicine articles.
He is also principal investigator for an AMA Reimagining Residency grant establishing a multi-institutional laboratory focused on optimizing clinical skill development and physician well-being.
Desai graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania, earning a Bachelor of Science in bioengineering and a bachelor of science in economics with a concentration in health care management from the Wharton School of Business.
He received his doctor of medicine degree from Harvard Medical School and completed his residency and subspecialty fellowship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he also served as chief resident.
