Jay Vaingankar, a 28-year-old Democrat of Indian origin, has entered the race in New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District, aiming to become the state’s first Gen Z and South Asian member of Congress.

India Abroad spoke with Jay Vaingankar about his experience and vision for NJ-12.

Vaingankar’s journey in politics and civic engagement began in his hometown in Mercer County. Growing up in a diverse immigrant community, “I saw how the language you speak at home, the color of your skin often determines your destiny”, he said, “that got me really interested in community organizing.” He got involved locally, such as transforming detention sites into mentorship programs and other initiatives that eventually led him into political campaigns.
