Indian-origin doctor jailed for hidden camera recordings
Former Ohio medical resident must register as a sex offender for 15 years.

An Indian-origin former medical resident in Ohio has been sentenced to six months in jail after pleading guilty to secretly recording hospital staff in a restroom at ProMedica Toledo Hospital, according to Lucas County court records.
Advait Deshmukh was sentenced in Lucas County Common Pleas Court after pleading guilty to one count of attempted tampering with evidence and seven counts of voyeurism. In addition to the jail term, he was placed on three years of probation and ordered to register as a sex offender for 15 years.

According to court records, Deshmukh must also attend Sexaholics Anonymous meetings, continue sex offender and mental health treatment, and remain on active adult probation until June 2029.
The investigation began in June 2025 after a hospital employee discovered a cellphone hidden inside a unisex staff restroom at ProMedica Toledo Hospital.
According to court records, when another employee attempted to remove the device, Deshmukh took possession of the phone and said it belonged to him.
A subsequent investigation by the Toledo Police Department and hospital officials found more than 80 images on the phone that investigators said had been recorded between February and May 2025.
Investigators identified six victims who had not consented to being recorded. Court documents also indicated that additional victims may exist and suggested similar recordings could date back to 2018.
At the time of the incident, Deshmukh was a third-year medical resident at the University of Toledo, specializing in endourology and urologic oncology.
Following the discovery of the hidden camera, the university placed him on administrative leave. His residency appointment was later not renewed following an internal investigation.
During sentencing, the presiding judge noted that Deshmukh planned to relocate to Franklin County, Ohio. He will be required to continue treatment and comply with sex offender registration requirements after his release.
Court records show that Deshmukh apologized to the victims before sentencing.
His attorney requested probation instead of incarceration, arguing that Deshmukh had been participating in therapy to address the behavior that led to the offenses. The court, however, imposed a six-month jail sentence along with probation and other conditions.
The case also requires Deshmukh to comply with ongoing mental health treatment and other conditions imposed by the court during his probation period.
Court records did not include information about Deshmukh's immigration status, visa category or other personal ties to India beyond identifying him as being of Indian origin.
