Jasmeet Singh / US District court
Indian-origin man, Jasmeet Singh, is awaiting indictment in California after being charged in connection with alleged cross-border extortion threats.
According to CBC News, Singh is accused of making threatening phone calls to an Indian-origin individual who had earlier assisted police in India in the arrest of two suspected blackmailers. The victim later moved to Canada following the blackmail incident.
Court documents allege Singh was acting on behalf of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. The complaint states that Singh threatened the victim by saying, “You’re going to die in Canada.” The victim also alleged that Singh sent a photograph of their car to underscore the threat.

A 14-page criminal complaint charging Singh with interstate communication of threats of violence was filed in the Eastern District of California in late November.
Singh remains in custody after a judge ruled that he posed a flight risk and a danger to the community. A hearing in the case is scheduled for December 18.
If convicted, Singh faces a maximum sentence of 10 years or more in prison.
