Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently unveiled the IITM Global Research Foundation, an international initiative of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras.
The initiative marks a step toward positioning the institute as a globally networked hub for education, research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. It aims to expand the institute’s academic, research, and innovation abilities globally.
In the initial stages, the institute has signed three agreements in the United States, one in the United Kingdom, three in Germany, three in Dubai, and three across the Asia-Pacific region, including Singapore and Malaysia.
Focus areas for collaboration include technology, data science, AI, cybersecurity, space, energy systems, health-related technologies, and green technologies.

“The partnerships are focused on joint research, industry and startup collaboration, global talent and knowledge exchange, and translating deep-tech innovation into real-world applications,” the official release stated.
Speaking at the launch, Jaishankar said, "Countries have grown by growing at home and then engaging abroad, leveraging the international environment in a way contributing to it and gaining from it,” adding that India’s foreign policy seeks to maximize global impact despite limited resources.
Referring to international outreach, Jaishankar said, “An IIT Madras campus in Tanzania is a way by which Indian foreign policy has leveraged the capabilities of an institution here to make a huge impact.”
V. Kamakoti, director of IIT Madras, said the foundation follows a four-pronged approach covering technology transfer, joint global research projects, international startup expansion, and attracting foreign investment.
The launch coincided with the inauguration of the IITM Festival Fortnight, which included an Open House granting public access to laboratories and innovation centers, along with the annual technical festival Shaastra 2026 and cultural festival Saarang 2026. Shaastra 2026 was scheduled from Jan. 2 to Jan. 6, while Saarang 2026 will be held from Jan. 8 to Jan. 12.
